nick Working for Nickelodeon

Client Name / Project Date: Nickelodeon Asia (Philippines, Singapore, New Zealand) 1 year retainer (2005-2006)

What They’re Known For: Who doesn’t know Nickelodeon? “The First Network For Kids”. They push the boundaries in creativity and manage to relate at eye-level with their kid audience (as opposed to talking down to them). When you hear the words slime orĀ  splat, you think of Nick.

Their Marketing Problem: They had two monthly ad requirements and an email blast. They also had various events to roll out in a year (Kid’s Choice Awards being one of them). The challenge was to produce material that was consistent with their global branding and yet still relate to the regional audience. You had to literally breathe their brand if you wanted to be creative but still faithful to who they are.

My Design Solution: This is the perfect example of how Design is a problem-solving exercise and not simply a creative endeavor. My client did not need me to express my personality in my work. They needed the total opposite. I had to embody their personality. They gave me tons of literature to read, countless of examples to look at, DVD’s of Nickelodeon shows just to reprogram my mind so to speak. In many ways I believe my design style is forever influenced by my experience at Nick. And it was 100% fun.
